M/others in Higher Education

M/others in the Institution is a creative response to research project Empowering Parents in Higher Education by Dr Jennifer Crane and Dr Erika Hanna at The University of Bristol, 2023 - 24.

I have been facilitating a series of six monthly creative lunchtime workshops for m/others and parents at the university to enable time and space to reflect on the dualities and complexities of parenting and working in Higher Education.

In each session we have been exploring themes such as ACCESS and how the institution welcomes or excludes parents and children; SUCCESS and how parenthood redefines success in our careers in unexpected ways; and WHAT WE CARRY, exchanging the weight of both identities and sharing the load where we can.

Workshops have included redactive poetry using university policies and anonymised emails; collage and installations around the buildings using access tape; sculpture assemblages using found objects from our own lives and creating trophies from scrap materials to acknowledge unrecognised achievements.

The conversations and creative outputs will inform a public artwork exhibited as part of The Festival of Research Cultures and at Senate House from July 2024.
