ABOUT

An exhibition from Charting Change, a two year public art commission led by artist Ellie Shipman for the University of Bristol’s new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus.

WORK IN PROGRESS speaks to all kinds of work in progress - from creatively responding to the evolving construction site of the new campus; to exploring the work in progress of how we work - and how far we still have to come in recognising who shaped local industry historically, to who is shaping community and research now and in future.

These themes are reflected on through temporary artworks by Charting Change Lead Artist Ellie Shipman and Programme Artist Jack Stiling in collaboration with Barton Hill History Group who have contributed historical artefacts and research which have shaped the sculptural responses.

To chart the change of a rapidly developing area with a complex history is a challenge, but this exhibition is an invitation to join the conversation, reflect on change, connect with community and play as we go.

Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus
The University of Bristol’s new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus (TQEC) is a major new development in the heart of Bristol. Next to Bristol Temple Meads station, it will be a welcoming campus surrounded by new public spaces and a restored natural landscape. TQEC will be a place for students, researchers, businesses, organisations and communities to work together on challenges that impact our everyday lives.

Public art for TQEC
The University has been commissioning public art at all stages of the Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus (TQEC) development. Current programming is being delivered with the Contemporary Art Society. Three public art commissions around TQEC are starting in 2024: Charting Change, Wild Spaces and the Public Realm commission.

Charting Change
Charting Change is a two year art commission, led by artist Ellie Shipman. This commission will explore the industrial histories of the site of the new campus, alongside its technological futures. Working with artists, local people, community and industry partners and researchers, Ellie is developing a series of temporary artworks and engaging events which will inform the design of a permanent textile artwork for the Story Exchange, a circular seating area in the new campus.
